The Year 12 geologists learn about Geoscience uni options
A massive thank you to Izzy Mackay, a second year PhD student in Geosciences at Imperial College, who spoke to our Year 12 geologists on Tuesday, 28th February, about life in the Geosciences at university. Izzy gave us an insight into the different courses on offer such as Geology, Geophysics and Petroleum Geosciences, and she told us where Geology could take us – not only in the opportunties it provides to travel the world, but also the exciting career paths the graduates go into. As well as highlighting the skills acquired through embarking on a Geoscience Degree, Izzy highlighted how these can transfer into the world of work, such as teamwork and problem solving. The questions came thick and fast from Marcus Corbin, Ryan Jones and Harry McLachlan, as we discovered the importance of ‘What not to put on a UCAS form’ (quotes and references to disaster movies apparently!), whether rowing scholarships are offered (yes!) and what a typical timetable looks like at university.
We also learned which clubs had the most socials! One of the best pieces of advice was to look past the first year when looking into courses on offer as some of the ‘electives’ in the second and third year are as important as what attracts you to the course in the first place. Thank you Year 12 for being so engaged and I am very proud of how you welcomed Izzy to the Department and the School. Thank you Izzy for such an enlightening lecture.
