Model United Nations & Model Arctic Council at Wycombe Abbey

Wycombe Abbey School hosted a Model United Nations and Model Arctic Council conference this weekend. A group of students from year 9 to 12 attended – the first time Reading Blue Coat has done so.

The standard of Model United Nations discussion was high, as students considered issues including the Iran nuclear deal and the militarization of space.

The Model Arctic Council was faced with the daunting task of re-establishing the Arctic Council after states refused to continue meeting due to the presence of Russia. This was at first met with difficulties, but with several compromises and informal discussions, the students were able to reach a solution. However, the resolution fell at the final hurdle because three states refused to accept guilt over historic human rights abuses. The students who participated said that Model Arctic Council provided a more collaborative, discursive alternative to Model United Nations, and all enjoyed the unique experience. Huge congratulations go to Ethan Travica, who was awarded a Special Commendation in his role representing an indigenous group.

A special highlight of the conference was the black tie dinner and highland ball on Friday night – never has so much fun been had while trying to solve the world’s problems!

With thanks to Miss T Van der Werff and Mrs L Bennett for their support and assistance with this excursion.
