Year 12 geologist Ollie S was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to work at BP’s Global Headquarters in Sunbury last week. This is Ollie’s has written a review of his week:
“On the first day, I was set a biostratigraphy task using real data, which was very interesting to do, and also rewarding when, on the final day, I found that my attempt was unexpectedly close to the real one! My mentor, Senior Biostratigrapher Dan Finucane, also introduced me to some of the people in the office, and I found out further what each of them worked on. These people included structural geologists, geochemists and sed-stratigraphers. This opened my eyes to the exciting future career opportunities available within BP and Geology. As well as the time I spent with the geologists, I enjoyed the HIVE session (which was a talk about how oil and gas traps form on a very big screen) and finding out about the Crisis Centre (the place where BP monitors its staff and facilities if there is an event). I feel that the time spent with BP was extremely beneficial, both in the short term with my studies and also longer term, having now had an insight into working life.
