The House System
The House system at Reading Blue Coat is an important aspect of School life, fostering community and providing a supportive network while igniting a spirit of friendly competition!
Our six Houses—Aldworth, Hall, Malthus, Norwood, Rich, and West—create a dynamic environment where pupils from Years 7-13 collaborate across year groups. Whether through fortnightly House assemblies or Cup and Shield Competitions, students forge meaningful connections and engage in enriching experiences.
Focusing on the engagement and wellbeing of the students, the six Heads of Houses work closely with their Prefect Team to plan and deliver engaging assemblies and activities in which pupils work together building communication and interpersonal skills. Confidence and a sense of family builds throughout the years, with pupils getting to know each other and feeling like a community.
Each pupil is assigned to a House Family, a group of students from years 7-13 that work together in designated House time to take part in competitions. This setup fosters cross-year-group interaction and allows older students to take on leadership roles, acting as mentors and helping younger students through their journey at Blue Coat.
Competitions are wide-ranging, appealing to the varied skills of the students at Blue Coat. Separated into Shield and Cup events, students participate in weekly competitions and events to win points for their House in the hope of clinching the coveted House Shield or House Sports Cup at the end of the year!
