The Geological Society of London
We were delighted to be asked to host Dr Mike Jones and the committee of the Thames Valley Regional Group of the Geological Society this week. Their visiting speaker, Dr. Andy Gibson from the University of Portsmouth, gave an insightful talk on the importance of studying terrestrial debris flows, which are highly destructive and account for thousands of deaths every year. His work focuses on the Zhouqu debris flow of 2010, which killed 1700 people, and with teams of geoscientists from the Universities of Portsmouth, Loughborough and the British Geological Survey, they are working together in trying to better understand these unusual phenomena. Thank you for choosing RBCS for your meeting. The Geology Department at RBCS very much look forward to working with you in the future. – Mrs Finucane, Head of Geology
