The Chess players have had a busy term and Mr Clark and I are delighted with the progress and enthusiasm displayed by the whole squad. The addition of Year 7 players Ethan, Ciaran, William M, William H, Armaan and Esat has increased the numbers at the club and made Monday evenings very competitive. We have played fixtures against Eton, RGS High Wycombe and Desborough but the highlight of the term was hosting the Berkshire regional round of the National Under 19 championships. We were able to put two teams in the competition and, although we did not progress, there were several notable victories against players who are far older. We have even played against several players from older years who have been in the England team for their age groups. The Year 8s have also continued to play well. These include Arnav, Robin, Ashwyn and Bharath.
The now veteran players in the Middle School – Alex, Idris, Henry and Richmond – have also performed really well in the face of some very accomplished opposition. James in Year 12 is captain of the team and, as well as being a really good player, he is always extremely kind and patient and has made sure that the team is always well organised. He also always beats me every time that we play! We have really enjoyed the Christmas coaching sessions provided by our coach Dino and next term there will be coaching every Monday evening in M1 after school, as well as the Tuesday lunchtime social club. If you are interested in joining please see me or Mr Clark. – Mr Wise, Deputy Head (Pastoral)
