The 1st VIII raced at the Metropolitan Regatta, at Eton’s Dorney Lake, on Saturday, in a category mostly filled with university crews. The boys rowed a controlled race in their semi final, to qualify in third place for the final, behind Winchester College and Kings College London. This put them in an outside lane in their seven-boat final. The crew had a fantastic start, and were leading the pack after the first 250m. During the middle of the race, Winchester College slowly edged in front, however Blue Coat manage to hold off ‘attacks’ from crews from Birmingham University and Liverpool University, with great coxing from Fred and stroking by Max. A final sprint saw the crew finish in second place, just ahead of the five university crews. A great result as we look towards the difficult task of qualifying for Henley Royal Regatta. A special mention goes to Year 10 Will who raced in the 1st VIII for the first time. – Mr Edmondson, Head of Rowing
