Our Sixth Formers were incredibly lucky today to hear about Old Blue Jamie Facer-Child’s remarkable experience of taking part in the historical Spear 17 Antarctica expedition in 2016/17. Jamie and his team are among only 11 people to traverse Antarctica successfully, and his stories about the expedition painted a vivid picture for the Sixth Formers. “It’s such a different environment from any other you’ve experienced”, Jamie said, “that it leaves you with a real sense of wonder”. Jamie, who is a doctor and arrived at Blue Coat today straight from A&E night duty, also had an opportunity to be reunited with the oar he donated to the School after he and fellow Old Blue James Thysse became the youngest pairs crew to row across the Indian Ocean in 2009.
