CCF Army Section take on HQ South East Military Skills Competition

Eight cadets and two members of staff represented Reading Blue Coat at the HQ South East Military Skills Competition, held at Pippingford Park Training Area between 13 and 15 March.

A clear but cold start set the tone for the weekend, with the team arriving at last light on Friday for an initial briefing led by acting captain James A. Tents were quickly pitched and ration packs prepared before temperatures dropped further overnight.

An early start on Saturday saw the group up at 6:00am after sub-zero conditions, preparing kit and equipment ahead of a full day of activity. Jasper D-C stepped into the role of team captain, leading the group through a demanding programme of assessed stands. These included first aid, section attacks, navigation, observation, model-making, signals, air rifle shooting and axe throwing.

The schedule continued into the evening, with cadets returning to camp for food and equipment maintenance. A welcome delivery of pizza provided a brief change of pace before preparations resumed for the final day.

Sunday began even earlier, with tents packed away ahead of further assessments covering command tasks, patrolling, ambush scenarios and military knowledge. Across the weekend, cadets were tested on a wide range of practical and leadership skills in challenging conditions.

The team worked consistently well both individually and together, demonstrating the core cadet values of courage, discipline, respect, integrity, loyalty and selfless commitment throughout. While no trophies were secured this time, the experience provided valuable learning and a strong foundation for future competitions.
